What happens in a first therapy session?

eCounselling editorial team

The first session is mostly about getting to know each other. The therapist will explain confidentiality and its limits, ask what brings you in, and ask about your history and goals.

You decide how much to share. You do not have to tell your whole story at once.

By the end, you should have a rough idea of how you might work together. It is normal to feel nervous. You can say so.

This is general information, not therapy or a diagnosis. Everyone's situation is different.
