Start with their doctor, because some causes of confusion can be treated. Then, while your parent can still make decisions, talk about their wishes. A lawyer can explain documents such as an enduring power of attorney and a personal directive.

Include your parent in decisions as much as you can. If they can no longer decide and no documents exist, a capacity assessment may be the next step.
